Position Summary

The Town of Devon is seeking to hire one (1) permanent, full‑time Recreation Operator I to support daily recreation operations across Town facilities and public spaces. This position performs assigned duties within parks, pool, and arena operations, and operators may be scheduled to assist in any service area as operational needs require.

The Recreation Operator I plays a key role in ensuring the Town of Devon’s public spaces and facilities are regularly inspected, safe, clean, and well‑maintained for public use. Due to the seasonal nature of the work and the broad range of responsibilities, this role requires strong attention to detail, excellent customer service skills, and well‑developed mechanical and building maintenance expertise.

Recreation Operators receive training and are qualified to perform ammonia ice plant operations, pool pump and chemical system operations, and other technical duties requiring specific experience, certification, and ongoing training.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support year‑round recreation operations, with duties shifting seasonally between Arena and Parks services

Spring/Summer (Parks Operations)

  • Maintain parks, trails, playgrounds, and athletic fields
  • Perform horticulture tasks including mowing, trimming, pruning, and litter control
  • Maintain Town buildings and facilities (arena, pool, community centre, offices)
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and facility inspections
  • Assist with pool seasonal start‑up, shutdown, and in‑season repairs (as trained)
  • Support special event setup, operations, and teardown

General Duties

  • Conduct daily and seasonal inspections to ensure public spaces are safe, clean, and functional
  • Operate hand tools and light‑ to medium‑duty motorized equipment as trained
  • Perform minor repairs and routine preventative maintenance
  • Follow all Occupational Health & Safety policies and procedures
  • Identify, report, and document hazards, maintenance issues, and completed work
  • Provide operational support for Town and community events, including after‑hours work as required
  • Assist with mentorship and supervision of seasonal staff when assigned

Winter (Arena Operations)

  • Provide customer service and facility support
  • Perform facility cleaning, janitorial duties, garbage removal, and recycling
  • Conduct snow removal and grounds maintenance
  • Complete ice plant checks (as trained)
  • Assist with seasonal arena start‑up and shutdown


Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Acceptable driver’s abstract (less than six demerits)
  • Ability to work a compressed work week, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Awareness of personal allergies (e.g., bees, grass, pollen, dust)
  • Successful completion of required security clearances

Preferred / Assets

  • 2–3 years of related experience in parks, facilities, or arena operations
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Prior experience in municipal parks, arena, or outdoor environments
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Chainsaw Awareness
  • Small engine mechanical experience

  • Pesticide Applicator Certification (Assistant or Full)
  • Playground Inspection Certification
  • AARFP Parks & Sports Fields – Level 1
  • Ammonia ice plant operations training
  • Pool pump and chemical operations experience


Position Details

  • Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday–Sunday; evening and weekend work required
  • Annual Salary Range: $51,139.82 – $64,416.50
  • Number of Openings: 1 – Permanent, Full‑Time
