DEPARTMENT: TIPAHASKAHN KAMIK - NIPIY DEPARTMENT


Summary:

Under the direction of the Nipîy Manager, the Junior Water Operator reports directly to the Senior Water & Wastewater Operator and will serve as an assistant, mentoring under the Senior Water Operator. The Jr. Water Operator is responsible for field & office duties as it relates to working on Samson Cree Nation water systems in the rural areas, as well as Pigeon Lake. They will provide the necessary support in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of SCN and Pigeon Lake water and wastewater systems. This is a full-time role. Successful applicants will adhere to the following duties, responsibilities and qualifications of this position:


Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in Well Servicing Operations

• Support senior operators and technicians in maintaining and repairing water wells.

• Operate and handle tools, pumps, and other well-servicing equipment.

• Monitor well performance and assist in troubleshooting issues.


Well Maintenance & Repairs

• Assist in pulling and replacing well components such as pumps, pipes and screens.

• Help clean and disinfect wells to ensure water quality.

• Support rehabilitation of wells affected by clogging, corrosion, or mechanical failures.


Equipment Handling & Safety Compliance

• Load, unload, and set up equipment at job sites.

• Follow safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

• Assist in maintaining tools, vehicles, and equipment in good working condition.


Site Preparation & Cleanup

• Help prepare work areas by setting up barricades, tools, and materials.

• Ensure proper cleanup of the site after servicing activities.

• Follow environmental protection procedures to minimize contamination risks.


Documentation & Reporting

• Assist in maintaining logs of well servicing activities on the LOUIS Toolkit.

• Report findings, incidents, and maintenance needs to supervisors and on the LOUIS Toolkit. 

• Work closely with Nipîy Manager, Field Supervisor and Senior Water & Wastewater Operators,

environmental experts, supporting consultants, and community members as designated or

assigned to ensure the program's objectives align with community needs.


Learning & Development

• Participate in on-the-job training and certification programs.

• Develop knowledge of well drilling, servicing, and repair techniques.

• Stay updated on industry regulations and safety standards.

• Participate in Cultural activities hosted by the Nipîy Department and/or Nation.


Collaboration

    Collaborate with the Nipiy Team at the weekly/daily/as needed or scheduled

    Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams through the LOUIS Toolkit and reporting

    Assist with Nipiy Operations tasks, as directed and as needed – well service, vacuum, etc.

    Ensures to mentor, support and provide on-site “Cross Training” of Nipiy Department Jr. Operators and Technicians


Safety

    Adhere to daily and all other safety protocols, guidelines and Nation-approved SOPs during field and office-related activities

    Willing to take additional training inclusive to Safety, Operations & Maintenance of Water & Wastewater O&M, upholding and ensuring compliance to OHS requirements 


Qualifications:

    Minimum Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent,

    Able to operate heavy equipment

    Must have Confined Space Entry & Rescue, or be willing to train Basic Safety online courses

    Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel)

    Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle

    Strong oral and written communication skills

    Knowledge of the Cree language would be an asset

    Comfortable working in office and field environments, working with little direction or supervision

    Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously and handle a large volume of work promptly

    Operators work both indoors and outdoors at physically demanding tasks and may be required to lift items weighing over 25 kilograms (55 lbs.)

    Adherence to the Samson Cree Nation NEP Manual is mandatory at all times
