Position: Traditional Land Use Lead
Department: Consultations
Summary:
Under the direction of the Consultation Coordinator the Land Use Lead assists the Consultation office to work with Elders and
community members to design and implement Traditional Ecological Knowledge & Traditional Use Studies related to projects.
Duties and Responsibility:
• The planning and implementation of TLU and TEK studies.
• Design models for each specific TLU and TEK Study.
• Engaging and the inclusion of community members, including elders.
• Providing logistics for each study.
• Work as a liaison between the nation and contractors, pertaining to Consultation projects.
• Creating a timeline, work plan, and budget for each study.
• Contribute to the SCN knowledge base.
• Historical preservation of landscapes with cultural and historical significance.
• Recording the Oral Knowledge/Histories of SCN Elders and Members.
• Provide support and back up to other areas within the Consultation Team as required.
• Reporting to the Consultation Coordinator, Business Development Senior Manager, and Business Development Committee.
• Community Engagement sessions on consultation projects as needed.
• Educate and advise Industry and Government on Indigenous rights, lands, culture and interests.
• Perform a variety of administrative duties in support of the Consultation Office.
Additional Responsibilities
• Represent SCN at external meetings, forums and workshops as assigned, or required in the performance of the Consultation
Traditional Land Use Lead responsibilities,
• Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with policies, standards, protocols and procedures of the SCN as directed,
• Contribute effectively as a team member to the overall plans and objectives of SCN,
• Participating in all applicable initiatives, workshops, conferences, and meetings,
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Consultation
Coordinator.
Knowledge and Abilities:
• Degree in an associated Social Science field (History, Anthropology, Sociology, Native Studies)
• Knowledgeable about Ethnographic Research methods.
• Knowledgeable about Community Based Research methods
• Knowledgeable about Archival research.
• Familiar with Mapping and GPS/GIS
• Must be able to work within an office space as well as in the fieldwork when needed
• Ability to take direction and work with no supervision.
• Awareness of Intellectual Property
• Awareness of negotiation and litigation with government and industry in relation to Treaty and Aboriginal Rights
• Community engagement facilitation skills (large groups, small groups, workshops, Indigenous Knowledge interviews)
• Ability to record accurate notes, and record keeping,
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong active listening skills,
• Proven planning, prioritizing, organizing and coordination skills,
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain successful and effective relationships with a variety of
internal and external contacts,
• Understands Samson Cree Nation culture, demonstrates cultural competency and sensitivity towards SCN cultural traditions with
the ability to use sound judgment and diplomacy in high stress/conflict situations,
• Demonstrated adaptable skills with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment,
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment,
• Advanced computer skills and use of MS Office, Adobe Acrobat and statistics/data analysis software,
• Proven ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
Qualifications:
• Valid Driver’s License
• Clear Criminal Record Check
• Must Submit a Resume, copy of Class 5 Drivers License with application
• Ability to speak/and or understand the Cree language is considered an asset
• Salary: Negotiable based on education, experience and skills
• Must have own transportation and will be required to provide proof of registration and insurance for their vehicle
